Charles and Sylvia Hawkins learned early in their marriage that they both enjoyed expressing themselves through art. Charles worked in oil painting while Sylvia used pastels, and dabbled in decorative painting. They put these interests on hold as their lives became quite busy, Charles running his clothing store and serving in the Virginia legislature, while Sylvia taught biology at Gretna High School. After retirement, both plunged back into their long-lost interests. Charles concentrated once again on oil painting, and Sylvia took up watercolor and watercolor pencil. Both are self-taught artists who enjoy art as a hobby.
